Interesting read. I think it also has to do with how used you are to landmarks. My wife was raised in a very open landscape where she could basically see whatever was the goal of her journey. I on the hand was raised near and spent a lot of time in the forrest, where not all landmarks are immediately visible. I often feel I have a more accurate sense of direction and distance.
